The global phenomenon of migration has recently become visible in cinema. Over the past two decades particularly, films have begun to reflect worldwide migration movements. There are two essential differences between these more recent films and previous ones dealing with this phenomenon. Firstly, new films approach the subject of migration as a global social issue. Secondly, actors in the role of immigrants have begun speaking their own language in the films. This has raised new issues in Translation Studies, and especially in Audiovisual Translation.
The aim of our paper is to describe plurilingualism in cinema productions by using a representative corpus of Spanish films belonging to the so-called polyglot genre and released on DVD in the past two decades. Rather than focusing on the dubbing and subtitling of these films, our intention is to identify whether or not these languages are translated in the original version and what strategies are used to render the meaning of other language utterances in the original Spanish films.
This research project was developed using descriptive, empirical methodology. The results of our research are twofold. Firstly, a taxonomy of identified strategies was created, following empirical observation. Secondly, the resulting sample database enabled us to answer one of our research questions, namely, whether the other languages are rendered in the original films with domesticating strategies or with foreignising strategies.

The TRAMA group (Translation in Audiovisual Media, www.trama.uji.es) is directed by Frederic Chaume and consists of José-Luis Martí-Ferriol, Juan-José Martínez-Sierra, Anna Marzà, Glòria Torralba, Ana Prats, Núria Vidal and Irene de Higes. This project has been carried out by Frederic Chaume, José-Luis Martí-Ferriol, Juan-José Martínez-Sierra, Ana Prats and Irene de Higes. Frederic Chaume is Professor of Audiovisual Translation at the Universitat Jaume I (Castelló/Spain), where he teaches Audiovisual Translation Theory, Dubbing and Subtitling. He has published several books and research articles on dubbing and audiovisual translation, as well as on dubbese, professional issues and didactics of audiovisual translation. José-Luis Martí-Ferriol works as a research fellow at the Universitat Jaume I (Castelló/Spain). He is specialised in comparing translations for dubbing and subtitling. Juan-José Martínez-Sierra teaches Audiovisual Translation at the Department of Spanish Language, General Linguistics, and Translation & Interpreting of the University of Murcia (Spain). He has already published several articles and a book on audiovisual translation, culture and humour. Ana Prats holds BAs in English and Translation and Interpreting, an MA in Spanish Literature and is completing an MA in Creative Translation. Irene de Higes holds a BA in Translation and Interpreting and is presently completing an MA in Creative Translation.
